The first Hero parade was held in the early 1990s, commemorating the heroes who were fighting the battle against AIDS and boosting our communities pride. Today the Auckland Rainbow Parade continues this legacy, by creating visibility and pride for our LGBTQIA+ heroes who came before us. Their advocacy, representation and drive have paved the way forward for us all – we stand today on those shoulders.
Rainbow Parade 2023
The Auckland Rainbow Parade is an opportunity for you to get involved with one of New Zealand’s most successful LGBTQIA+ events. It’s your chance to show lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual/takatāpui, queer/questioning, intersex, and allied/asexual/aromantic/agender people from all over New Zealand and further afield the very best Auckland has to offer.
Participation in the parade gives the opportunity for expression of celebration, joy and triumph but also the voice to rightly express the continued fight for those injustices and inequalities that exist amongst us. Together we stand shoulder to shoulder as a community celebrating love, diversity and inclusion.
When is the next Parade?
The Rainbow Parade is one of Auckland’s most highly anticipated events creating community and visibility with hundreds of people walking proudly together down Ponsonby Rd with thousands of supporters cheering us along the way.
This year we’d like you to join us as we turn the city into one of the largest parade celebrations Auckland has ever seen. So whether you’re a community group or workplace gleaming with pride, standing shoulder to shoulder with an important message of support, the parade places you at the centre of the celebrations.
